They'll reach 3 inches in diameter but can be harvested as soon as they reach 1in across. The greens are similar to spinach or chard and up to 1/3 of the leaves can be harvested without harming the root. Detroit Dark Red is an especially tender variety that prefers full sun but will tolerate some shade. Growing Instructions: 1) Direct sow: In spring 2-4 weeks before last frost date or in the fall 6-8 weeks before first expected frost. Sow seeds thinly 1/2 inch deep in rows 12in apart. Keep soil evenly moist but not overly wet. Water gently before germination occurs to avoid disturbing seeds. Germination will occur around 14-21 days. Thin to one plant every 3 inches when seedlings have reached 2-3in tall.
