Vintage Joan Crawford Sheet Music, Chant of the Jungle, Matted 14x18

This is a 14 x 18 inch professionally done, custom double-matted “Chant of the Jungle,” sheet music from the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer picture, “Untamed,” copyright 1929. The front cover features Joan Crawford posed in a sexy red dress on the left side, and amazing graphic illustrations of Joan Crawford dancing, with the musicians in the background. The colors are a soft red, gray, cream and black. Lyrics by Arthur Freed, Music Nacio Herb Brown. This 1929 movie starred Joan Crawford and Robert Montgomery. “Untamed” was made during the period from Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer’s transition from silent movies to “talkies.” “Untamed” was Joan Crawford’s first speaking role. This film was Montgomery’s first leading man role. He had roles in several silent films prior to being cast in “Untamed.” Note how the film is talked about as a “picture,” on the cover of this sheet music instead of a movie, or film, as it would be called later in Hollywood history. “Untamed” is a drama/comedy/romance movie. The cast also included Ernest Torrence, Holmes Herbert, Gwen Lee, and Lloyd Ingraham. It was directed by Jack Conway. The script was adapted by Sylvia Thalberg and Frank Butler, with dialogue by Willard Mack. The story was by Charles E. Scoggins. The back cover lists other songs available from the music publisher (see photos). This matted sheet music will arrive to you ready to place into your standard-sized, 14 x 18 inch frame. The photos I’ve taken show how your print looks in the double mat, as it will reach you, and an example of how your matted print will look framed. This matted sheet music is in a hinged mat, backed by foam board, and is sitting in archival polyester picture corners. The music is set up to display as wall art, but it can be removed and played as well. The sheet music is entire and complete. The print is matted with quality, USA made mat board. It is attached with archival polypropylene mounting corners to quality foam board. The mat is hinged with linen hinging tape. This copy is in good vintage condition; pages still attached, all of them are there, and the cover is bright; it does show wear, some minor crinkles, with signs of usage, patina of age, and yellowing on the edges. There is a beautiful cursive signature (Helen Smith) from the original owner of this sheet music in green ink above the figure of Joan Crawford on the left side. In the same ink she also wrote “#2” (maybe the second piece she was performing at some function?). There is a 9 inch diagonal crease that runs from the top middle right to the middle of the right side of the cover. The back cover shows some wear and discoloration, and darkening of color and wear at the crease where the music bends and is attached. The inside pages show some yellowing on the edges of the pages, and have a patina of age to them, but the contents are completely usable. Please look at the photos I have included in this listing for the best idea of how it looks, as this is the most accurate representation of the condition. In 1999, the American Film Institute ranked Crawford tenth on its list of the greatest female stars of Classic Hollywood Cinema. Beginning her career as a dancer in traveling theatrical companies, before debuting as a chorus girl on Broadway, Crawford signed a motion picture contract with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in 1925. In the 1930s, Crawford's fame rivaled, and later outlasted, MGM colleagues Norma Shearer and Greta Garbo. Crawford often played hard-working young women who find romance and success. These stories were well received by Depression-era audiences and were popular with women. Crawford became one of Hollywood's most prominent movie stars and one of the highest-paid women in the United States. In 1928, Crawford starred opposite Ramón Novarro in “Across to Singapore,” but it was her role as Diana Medford in “Our Dancing Daughters” (1928) that catapulted her to stardom. The role established her as a symbol of modern 1920s-style femininity which rivaled Clara Bow, the original “It” girl, then Hollywood's foremost flapper. A stream of hits followed “Our Dancing Daughters,” including two more flapper-themed movies, in which Crawford embodied for her legion of fans (many of whom were women) an idealized vision of the free-spirited, all-American girl. Scott Fitzgerald wrote of Crawford: “Joan Crawford is doubtless the best example of the flapper, the girl you see in smart night clubs, gowned to the apex of sophistication, toying iced glasses with a remote, faintly bitter expression, dancing deliciously, laughing a great deal, with wide, hurt eyes. Young things with a talent for living.” In 1945 by starring in “Mildred Pierce,” she won the Academy Award for Best Actress.
